Overview

The AK-12 was standardised in 2018. Its development is worth noting: the original 2012 proposal was a radical redesign, rejected on cost and reliability grounds, and the version finally adopted returned to something much closer to the AK-74M, with most changes confined to the human interface.

That retreat says something: the AK platform's real asset is not any performance figure but tens of millions of existing rifles, mature production lines, and generations of trained users. Any radical change must be weighed against that asset, and the weighing almost always favours conservatism.

Set against the M4A1, both faced the same problem in the 2010s: how to fit 2010s optics, lasers, and load-bearing equipment onto a 1960s mechanical platform. The AK-12's answer was rails, a new stock, and a reworked selector — little change in shape, all of it in the interfaces.

Design

The long-stroke piston defines the AK lineage: the piston is fixed to the bolt carrier, and gas drives the whole assembly directly. It is extremely reliable, and gas and fouling never enter the receiver. The cost is large reciprocating mass — the carrier's travel visibly disturbs the point of aim, and that is the mechanical root of the dispersion the AK family has always been criticised for.

The contrast with the HK416's short-stroke piston makes the difference clear: a short-stroke piston pushes the carrier briefly then separates, with far less moving mass, so accuracy approaches direct impingement while gas still stays out of the receiver. The AK buys its reliability with accuracy; the HK416 tries to have both, and pays in complexity and cost.

Receiver height is the most direct visual cue: with the piston above the barrel, an AK receiver stands noticeably taller than an AR's.
