Overview

The first Type 055 commissioned in 2020, at over twelve thousand tonnes full load with 112 launch cells — exceeding the Burke Flight III on both counts. Western classifications generally treat it as a cruiser; China designates it a destroyer.

But what deserves attention is not those per-ship figures but the build rate: eight had been launched or commissioned within a few years of the lead ship, where the Burke took close to eight years to reach its eighth hull. Shipbuilding capacity rather than per-ship capability is this class's substantive significance.

One caveat: China has never published the Type 055's displacement, cell count, or radar performance. Everything here comes from photogrammetry against public imagery and Western institutional estimates, with disagreements marked in the specification table. Even the cell count — an apparently definite integer — is arrived at by counting hatches on deck.

Design

The layout follows the same thinking as the Burke: inward-sloping sides, an integrated mast, and forward and aft vertical launch groups. The difference is mostly scale — a larger hull means more cells, larger radar apertures, better seakeeping, and more electrical margin.

Electrical margin is an easily overlooked but decisive figure. To fit the SPY-6 radar the Burke Flight III required a full rework of power and cooling and left the hull near its limit; the Type 055 was designed around higher power demand from the start, leaving room for future high-energy weapons. That is the same reasoning behind the Zumwalt's electric propulsion, arrived at by increments rather than a leap.

The integrated mast encloses the phased arrays and electronic warfare equipment in one structure, giving a lower signature than the Burke's open lattice. It is standard practice for warships designed in the 2010s.
